Chinese New Year - 26 Jan 2009 (Year of Ox)

For this Chinese New Year, took 10.5 days off as need to clear some of my last year's leaves and took a break from all the misery news. Since year 2007, after the housing loan's collapse, every day has been filled with bad news. Credit crunch, Lehman Bros closed down in Sept 2008, Merrill Lynch and AIG in troubles and need to be bailout by US government etc and it is never ending bad news, coming like the ocean waves, hitting upon all humankinds around the world. US unemployments went up (my company cut close to 1900 jobs from 2008 till now, China has 20 million workers losing their jobs etc). This is the bleakest moments for many as some lost jobs, lost their retirement fund (losing to Madoff, ex-Nasdaq CEO ponzi con-job. Some killed their families and took own lives), lost their homes etc and this hit around the world. With US consumer confidence at its lowest, the wave hit China as China is the biggest manufacturers for goods sent to USA and around the world. Once factories closed down or cutdown productions, it impacts mining industry and also scrapmetal companies. Oil price too dropped a lot in Q4'08, good news for consumers but bad news to oil companies.

Shanghai-March 2008

was in Shanghai for one week's work, end March 2008. took the Maglev train, which speed upto 430 KMH from Longyang train station to Pudong Airport. Terminal 2 just opened and MAS flies from here too. Rainy days, and on a friday nite, had some drinks with Alex and S-Tat with his two S'porean friends (one based in Guangzhou, selling products via eBay to European customers and the other, works in S'pore for an Italian company and a very generous chap as he shouted for all the drinks at Beni's Bar (rmb 230 for 6 persons beers) and Indian (live music pubs-another rmb 500 for a bottle of chival regal whiskey) at hengshan lu. went to shanghai science museum train station's underground shops (new xiangyang market) to buy some Pradas bags for my wife.

Chinese Rat New Year 2008

quite quiet this year, so not much decorations.
lost > rm 400 in blackjack game. wife had to be hospitalized on 16-17 feb at pantai hospital. not a good start. anyway, lives go on and hoping for better months to come.
ate family dinner at six happiness restaurant at imbi road on 2nd day of CNY. had yee sang (see photo) to toss for better year for all of us!
8th day eve - went to parents house to pray. had a big roasted pig, cost rm 640 and i think it is 40 katis in weight. had to chop the whole pig up for distributions after the prayer. not many firecrackers or lanterns that go up to sky compared to prev. years. last year did not make it here for this 'pai tee kong' (pray to heavenly god) as was in USA for works.

bought my corner superlinked house (looks like semi-d) last birthday (oct 2007).
it is still under construction and cost rm 760k. land area is 5780 square feet, quite spacious and will be ready end 2008. photo of the house still under construction.

X'mas Eve and New Year Eve Dinners 2007

Plentiful of foods, wines and grandfather port for the two dinners at family gatherings at my sis-in-law's house. X'mas-drank the golden dew wine (golddust inside sweet golden wine, cost rm 100 from Oz) and ate turkey, loong foong ducks etc. Drank grandfather port from oz too with secret recipe cake. daughter back from melbourne with many white cherries and red cherries to eat too during new year eve.

Philly and Newark - Nov 2007

Protest (bring back our kids from the warzone in Iraq and Afghanistan) beside Visitor Center, City Hall with William Penn Statue on top. Stayed at Newark Hilton Elizabeth beside Budweiser Beer factory and Newark Airport, and shopping at JerseyGarden and X'mas tree with Santa are there for kids to take photo with.

Philly-2nd Bank of USA, Independence Hall from the back's view, The Signor etc. Shitting at Omni Hotel, lobby's toilet and got scared when saw a face staring at me from the marble floor on the left of my foot.
It was raining leaves and rain at Bryn Mawr near Villanova University and the fall's brown and orangey leaves on the trees were colorful and pleasant to view. No photos yet on this.

Was in Philly's Chinatown during Chinese New Year's festival. Went to Macy to shop and when was out, it was snowing and had to use umbrella to walk back to hotel. Photo shows Independence Mall and The Signor in snow.

Went to Ben Franklin's old house (iron frame only) and his post office which is one stone throw from my hotel, Omni. The job poster is for applicants to a post office mailboy riding ponies to deliver letters. That's Ben Franklin, the famous politician, inventor, newspaper publisher etc. Franklin Court and its underground museum is worth visiting to know Ben better.

Sawadee-krup, was in Bangkok on Dec 5, 6, 8 and 9 for vacation.
Snapped a nice photo of Vege transporters on kap-cai (small bike) from the tour-bus, climbed up the steep Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) to get a good view of Bangkok city and cruised along Chao Phrya River to checkup the floating market, wat arun, grand palace etc.

met a 60 years old-plus maori cab driver who drove me to airport to catch my qantas flight to melbourner. he said he went to malaya during the 60s, serving as nz army.
was in kl again in the 80s for some consulting works and he was amazed by the drastic change to kl city skyline. met another ozzie colleague who also used to stay in malacca back in 60s/70s as his dad served in oz's airforce. he was lucky as his dad travelled a lot and he ended touring china, visiting many cities along yangtze river via cruise during those days.

was in auckland and otahuhu for one week's work. city did not change much since the last i was here back in 2001. but, traffics flow is quite bad nowadays, as many cars on the road and there are many koreans and korean restaurants along queen street. the thai restaurant near sky casino is still there and had dinner there once. took a ferry ride to davenports and climbed up the mt victoria to checkup the auckland city view plus the twin-peaked volcano rangitoto island.

saw some nice chalk paintings on the ground, along the way to crown casino.
the drought painting aptly show the drought that hit downunder for many years now. farmers are committing suicides as losing biz. due to lack of water.
the other painting shows a happy tree once there is water. pray that the rains will come soon, as i need better wines supply from oz. love their shiraz & cab sauvignon (normally, i got my supply from rosemount estate & during wines warehouse sales at sri damansara). cheerio mateys!

gooday mateys, was in melbourne in april for works. went around bacchus marsh-to checkup apples orchards and outputs, geelong to visit the company's plant, beaconsfield (near dandenong)& camberwell for office visits/meetings. had yummy vietnamese beef noodles in victoria street, bubbly crown lager beer, rosemount estate shiraz wine etc. met up with my wife's sis family as they just got back from tasmania vacation & they stayed along prospect hill road which is near to the hotel i stayed, beside yarra river. drove a zippy toyota yaris during the stay, courtesy of avis rental and lost my way from airport to the hotel the first nite i landed in melbourne after the short flight from auckland. cheers.

after my shanghai's trip, came back to KL & my other half told me her sister's good friend's hubby is a part-owner of London Circus and passed her close to 30 free VIP tickets. so, no choice, had to bring the family out for the show. somehow, these past weeks are like circus days for me, full of excitements and to checkup the circus acts in shanghai and KL. London Circus performers are mainly from Russia, elephant, dogs and horse/monkey acts from M'sia or India and the two MCs (lady and guy) that sang quite good opera songs (incl. from phantom of opera) are most likely filipinos, as they had great and powerful voices. the kids love the magician show. 5 bikes in the round cage compared to 8 bikes in Shanghai circus. the shanghai circus is of better quality and more scary performance. went to matta fair and taiwan alisan dancers were performing, bought 8-days thailand trip for the family (bangkok, pattaya, chiengmai). will go there in december. in another week, will be heading to redang island (laguna resort) for 3 days snorkelling and relaxation. been there few years ago and enjoyed the sea and sun and the snorkelling.

August 26 to Sept 1, 2007 (Shanghai)
Was in Shanghai for works and also, acts as tour guide to three American colleagues.
ate Korean beef BBQ, downed with TsingTao beers at Pudong, ate Chinese food & downed with Chinese white rice wine (~38 alcohol content)at Xiao Nang Kok Restaurant (next to HongQiao Pearl City shopping mall), shanghainese xiao long pau (little dragon bun) etc at Lu Bo Lang, Yuyuan and then, ate deep fried 'ta wan ser' (King of Snake) etc at Xiao Nan Kok's Restaurant (near Wanda Shopping Mall) before heading for circus show (Era-at Shanghai Circus). Cost is around rm 130 for side seat, near stage. quite enjoyable shows, as the stunts plus the music and lighting and special effects are quite good. highly recommended if u have time to spare at nite in Shanghai. http://www.era-shanghai.com/EN/about.asp for details. The last I saw a circus show was when I was a little kid and that is more than 30 years ago. The best stunt is the one on the photo, those guys blindfold and walked on top of the rings while it swung around, and they even jumped on a rope. It was scary as it is high (>4 storeys) and there is no safety rope in case they slipped. walked along nanjing lu, the main shopping street in shanghai and saw people reading public newspaper on the board. look up for the chap with his own-made boxer, quite a funny scene. took some nite shots of pudong skylines, the world financial centre is at its top now (still under construction) and now, ranked 2nd tallest building in the world, close to 500 metres high.

A relative bought a rm 530k 1800 sf unit here for investment. so, went with him to check up the views from 8th floor and higher up.
it seems a VVVIP politician son and Naza boss also owns the penthouse units here since this is built by TTDI properties which is now owned by Naza, the king of imported cars plus assembler for Kia cars. went into one of the double-storey penthouse and was very impressed with the views as can see KL city skyline.

Saw these interesting redwine bottles back in April'07 in a small cafetaria, I packed my hot meatpies for lunch.
It seems it comes from a small winery nearby. Regretted as should had bought one bottle for souvenir. Maybe, can hawk it out on ebay S'pore and make some moolah.

From Bologna, took a train to Venice. A nice gentleman (a tout) took us to a hotel near Rialto Bridge to stay. quite a lovely and teeny-weeny room with attached bathroom and cheap too. no cars in venice except one ferrarri inside the ferrarri shop, manned by schumacher himself. houses here are scary as most sunk into water during high tide. even the walkway is flooded, so there have raised platform which they put out during high tide. venice transport is mainly ferry or walking or gondola (for tourists only-lah). a lot of nice church, san marco, can hear classical orchestra. a lot of shops selling murano glasses. took a ferry to murano island to watch two chaps blow glasses and make pranching horse, the logo of ferrari. pissing here using public toilet is expensive, euro 1 per piss. should have pissed into the canal. bugger!

took a train from rome termini station to bologna. in rome, went to vatican museum, st peter catheral etc to checkup some michelangelo's masterpieces, colosseum, constantine gate and a lot of ancient places, like Parthenon and fountain.
expensive hotel room at hotel roma at bologna, euro 130 per nite.
saw the balcony of juliet as in romeo and juliet but not so sure whether the one in the photo is the correct one. one of a distant friend, lucio cecchinello, a ex-GP125 racer and now, team manager for MotoGP came from Bologna (he used to have Casey Stoner as his rider in GP250, the young aussie who is now leading the points in MotoGP race this year, 2007. btw, there is a leaning tower in bologna too, maybe, built by the same architect of leaning tower of pisa. the pizza is delicious too and the chinese restaurant's owner daughter (chinese) spoke italian to me and i know nil on this language except 'gracias' and 'mamma mia'. look at the photo with the building that has a Dato Ali, didn't know Malaysian has ventured into bologna too, a Dato Ali, the building looks ancient, need to checkup when the sultans started giving dato titles out (Dato is one-level lower similar as Sir/OBE title given out by Queen Elizabeth but at times, I heard can be purchased using moolah like RM 100K onwards).

Was in Rome, Italy followed by Bologna and then Venice for almost a week. did not book any hotels before we flown there, so my wife and I just walked around to hunt down our stays when we arrived at the sites. quite adventurous but a bir risky and at times, costly as we found up when we stayed in Bologna Roma Hotel which cost a bomb, Euro 130 per nite.

Actually, flight from London was canceled due to heavy fog and ended up flying to Parma and then took a train down to Rome. Found up a lot of Bangladeshi in Rome, as the hotel room we stayed is run by a Bangladeshi and souvenirs shops are manned by Bangladeshi.
Even, the Italian restaurant we ate dinner in Venice, I saw the chef was Bangladeshi. Somehow, the wealthy countries rely a lot on cheap labour to work in some of the labor-intensive sectors. That's biz. life, I guess.

Oct 14: Went to Southend-on-sea seaside town, where there is casino, funfair plus a long pier out to the sea with a train ride on it. Very cold as windy. Halloween decos in shop and had cappucino & hot chocolates at a shop. Halloween fireworks can be heard towards end October and Guy Fawkes nite aka Fireworks nite too. Had fish and chips takeaway by my 2nd sister from Pitsea shop. Somehow, I prefer fish and chips (esp. fried calamaries/scallops/dories fish) from Coogee, NSW Australia where I used to stay during my Uni days. Ate some Clementine (baby sweet sour oranges) too.

Oct 13-shopping for discounted Next and bhs clothings at Choice and also, Eastgate Shopping Center in Basildon. Bought bhs jacket, Lonsdale London sport t-shirts etc.
Visited my 2nd sister plus hubby who manned a Chinese takeaway shop called Oriental Inn between Blenfeet and Pitsea. This shop is their JV-with my youngest sister. Had some takeaway dinner from this eating house. Famous dishes here are heong-soong aark (loosed duck meats wrapped in pastry cum spring onions and sweet sauce) and also lamb meat too.

Oct 12-train zooming 30 minutes in darkness via eurotunnel (under the Channel sea) for a 2 hours train ride from Paris to London. Took London subway and train to Blenfeet with my brother-in-law to my sister's house (1 hour away from London).

Oct 11-dead tired walk up to Sacre Coeur Byzantine-style basilica, the highest point in Paris. A Filipino street performer, singer cum guitarist plus audiences dances to entertain all during our rests up there. Walked down to Montmarte, hilltop village with many souvenir shops to shop for fridge magnets and bells.
